Introduction - Guatemala
Hello everyone! I have chosen Guatemala as my country for this course. Guatemala, meaning "place of many trees", is known for its rich and unique culture, notably the history of the Mayan civilizations and its ruins which still stands to this day. In addition, the country is home to active volcanic sites including Fuego and Acatenango, and this in particular is what has drawn me to choose Guatemala. I recall watching the news of the eruption of Fuego back in 2018, and hearing how it had been one of the most severe and devastating natural events in recent history for the country really stood out to me.
Based on reading the first chapter, the differences between hazards, disasters, and catastrophes is that natural hazards are potential threats that can cause harm to both humans and properties. Disasters occurs in limited times with a specific area, and results in significant damages not only to the communities or the environment, but also cause death in numbers. Lastly, catastrophes involve in a more severe and massive destructive events that often leads to long-lasting impacts and recovery.
Great first post; welcome to class!
