EARTHQUAKES AND PREVENTIONS

Earthquakes are present in Guatemala and seismically active due to being placed along the Ring of Fire, an area highly active to tectonic activities. It is no surprise that the country is prone to earthquakes, both big and small. One of the largest and most catastrophic earthquakes in Guatemala occurred in February 4, 1976 with a magnitude of 7.6 (image above).

According to the latest earthquakes in the Central American Region, Guatemala experienced seven earthquakes alone from January 13 to January 27, 2024, with magnitudes ranging from 4.1 to 6.1. 6.1 was the most recent magnitude, and is also the strongest earthquake in Guatemala in over 7 months

Guatemala is classified as a high hazard level when earthquakes occur. Despite this level, there are not much disaster risk reductions or plans due to the country being underdeveloped. However, one article from Pounds of Prevention discusses a program by USAID and municipal risk management office where basic equipments are given to the villagers, such as radios, flashlights, stretchers, shovels, and first aid kits. In addition, training and hands-on experiences are performed, including damage assessment, data compilation, radio communications, and life-saving first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and treatment of limb fractures for those injured. This allows communities to be better prepared and organized for when there is an earthquake.
Build Change Programs also focuses on retrofitting buildings for school and neighborhoods in an effort to provide durable housing.

  1. Hi Tiffanie, I think it is really interesting to learn about a place that is located in the ring of fire and how it contributes to earthquakes. I have personally gone to Guatemala and it is such a beautiful country. I found it very shocking how a majority of Guatemala is at high risk of earthquakes. Half of it also being medium and there not having any low to very low zones of earthquakes. I am glad they are taking the precautions for earthquakes such as earthquakes and helping building structures. Thank you so much for sharing!
